The exhibition will open on August 7 at 18:00 and will run through September 7. The curator of the exhibition is Vanda Mujiri.
The exposition will feature works created by the artist in recent years across various mediums, including sculpture, painting, and graphics.
Paata Merabishvili - artist, sculptor, and designer - belongs to the generation of Georgian artists who began their creative careers in the 1990s.
Paata Merabishvili was born in Tbilisi in 1964. Upon graduating from the Iakob Nikoladze Art School, he continued his studies at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in the Faculty of Sculpture, under the studio of Gogi Ochiauri.
After graduating from the Academy, he pursued his artistic career abroad. He actively participated in international exhibitions and symposia, quickly gaining recognition and popularity. His works are held in notable collections around the world.
In 2023, Paata Merabishvili returned to his homeland and presented his work to the Georgian public for the first time through a retrospective exhibition titled De-Formation at Gallery "Vanda," which showcased his sculptures, paintings, and graphic works.
Paata Merabishvili’s oeuvre clearly and uniquely reveals a synthesis of national traditions and modernist plastic art. Drawing upon a deep understanding of world artistic culture, materials, and technologies, the sculptor creates his own multifaceted artistic world. As a follower of tradition, he skillfully integrates various artistic movements into his works, defining his individual artistic language.
Despite the abstract nature characteristic of Paata Merabishvili's work, his sculptures generally remain within the context of figurative art. His practice is distinguished by bold formal experimentation and an intense search for plastic expressiveness.
Paata Merabishvili attaches great importance to color, which he uses boldly in his work. The vibrant, monochrome, saturated colors of the volumes allow the viewer to sense their plastic qualities, dynamics, expressiveness, and rhythm.
Paata considers himself first and foremost a sculptor; however, alongside sculpture, he devotes considerable time to painting, graphics, and collage. His highly emotional, dynamic, and resonant canvases and collages find their continuation in his sculptures.
For Paata Merabishvili, being a sculptor means: "an inner state of perceiving everything in space, where even a thought possesses volume and color."
Translating these sensations into form - both on a flat surface and in space - is the core expression of his artistic vision.
